Marble, onyx, and quartzite are among my favorite materials for countertops, backsplashes, walls, and flooring. Nothing is more timeless and luxurious than their lustrous surfaces and veining. For a powerful effect, consider using extravagantly veined or colored slab marble panels on walls. Sometimes I like to combine tiles of limestone or marble with porcelain or ceramic, allowing the movement and veining of the natural stone to play off the subtler finish of man-made material.
Because no two gatherings are the same, the composition of living rooms needs to allow for flexibility, adapting to events both large or intimate, dressed up or dressed down.
