The Perfect Room: REFRESH

AN EXCERPT FROM THE PERFECT ROOM: TIMELESS DESIGNS FOR INTENTIONAL LIVING

“Marble, onyx, and quartzite are among my favorite materials for countertops, backsplashes, walls, and flooring. Nothing is more timeless and luxurious than their lustrous surfaces and veining. For a powerful effect, consider using extravagantly veined or colored slab marble panels on walls. Sometimes I like to combine tiles of limestone or marble with porcelain or ceramic, allowing the movement and veining of the natural stone to play off the subtler finish of man-made material. I always mix in furniture pieces to temper the bathroom’s hard surfaces—an antique dresser or hutch for linen storage, a skirted vanity chair, or an upholstered bench.”

Designing is more than just achieving a beautiful aesthetic—it’s about creating a home that truly enhances the way you live. Every decision, from the placement of furniture to the selection of textures, should be intentional. In the bathroom, I love blending contrasting materials like smooth marble, hand-forged brass, and natural woods to bring a sense of depth and warmth. These complementary textures not only add visual interest but also create a luxurious, tactile experience that balances beauty with function. Thoughtful design is about finding harmony in every detail, ensuring your spaces are as practical as they are inviting. DESIGNING BATHROOMS WITH INTENTION

My approach to bathroom design is all about blending timeless elegance with thoughtful materials that create a sense of luxury and personal connection. I love the organic texture of zellige tiles and the warmth that unlacquered brass brings as it ages. Natural materials like stone floors and Tadelakt surfaces ground the space, while polished nickel adds a sleek, refined touch. I also enjoy incorporating custom plaster flower designs to give a unique, artistic feel to primary bathrooms. And, of course, I always prioritize natural light, ensuring every bathroom feels serene, inviting, and beautifully functional.

MARIE’S FAVORITE BATHROOM FINISHES

Zellige Tile: One of my favorite bathroom finishes, zellige tile brings a handcrafted, artisanal feel to any space. Its naturally uneven surface catches the light beautifully, adding warmth and texture. Whether used in a shower or as a backsplash, these Moroccan tiles create a timeless yet distinctive look, blending modern elegance with old-world charm.

Stone Floors: Stone floors are a signature of luxury in bathroom design, offering both durability and beauty. I love the organic feel and timeless quality they bring to a space, whether in marble, limestone, or slate. Each stone has unique veining and patterns, grounding the bathroom with a natural, elegant texture that’s perfect for balancing sleek fixtures.

Unlacquered Brass Plumbing: I often chooses unlacquered brass plumbing for its ability to develop a beautiful patina over time. This finish ages gracefully, creating a lived-in feel that adds warmth and character to a bathroom. Its rich, golden hue pairs beautifully with natural materials, making it a favorite in both traditional and contemporary designs.

Polished Nickel Plumbing: For a sleek, sophisticated look, opt for polished nickel plumbing. This finish offers a cool, refined shine that elevates the bathroom’s elegance while being highly versatile. Unlike chrome, polished nickel has a subtle warmth, making it perfect for complementing both modern and classic design elements.

Tadelakt Surfaces: I absolutely love the subtle beauty of Tadelakt, a traditional Moroccan plaster technique that results in smooth, waterproof surfaces. Its organic texture and soft sheen create a seamless, spa-like atmosphere in bathrooms. Ideal for walls and shower enclosures, Tadelakt offers a tactile, minimalist finish that feels both luxurious and understated.

Custom Plaster Flower Designs in Primary Bathrooms: When possible, think outside the box. Embrace artistic details in her designs, particularly custom plaster flower installations in primary bathrooms. These handcrafted pieces add a sculptural element to the space, turning walls into works of art. These intricate designs, inspired by nature, bring a sense of elegance and personal craftsmanship that feels truly one-of-a-kind. I love the plaster flowers to so much, that I created my own bespoke collection of artwork inspired by these pieces.

Importance of Natural Light and Illuminating Vanity Areas: Natural light is essential in Marie’s bathroom designs, as it enhances the sense of openness and serenity. She thoughtfully positions windows and skylights to bathe the space in soft, natural light. For vanity areas, she prioritizes excellent illumination, blending task lighting with ambient fixtures to ensure the space is both functional and inviting.

Wallcoverings: Bathroom walls can become statement pieces through the use of luxurious wallcoverings. From textured grasscloth to bold, hand-painted designs, wallcovering adds depth, pattern, and a sense of intimacy. It’s an opportunity to infuse personality and elevate the space beyond the expected, turning the bathroom into a truly special retreat.

Incorporate Antiques: An antique armoire or cabinet, with its rich patina and intricate detailing, brings character and history into the home while offering a practical solution for storing linens. The charm of using a piece that has stood the test of time creates a sense of warmth and connection, blending old-world elegance with modern functionality. Vintage rugs are also a perfect accent piece to add interest to the space.

By thoughtfully incorporating these must-have items, you can create a living room that is both functional and stylish, reflecting your personal taste and enhancing the way you live. Each piece plays a vital role in crafting a space that is inviting, practical, and uniquely yours.
